Stability is one of the greatest concerns for above-the-knee (AK) amputees. The C-Leg® from Otto Bock offers stability during all phases of walking which substantially reduces the worry of falling. The C-Leg® is a hydraulic knee joint run by microprocessors that take data 50 times per second. The data is used to anticipate what the amputee is doing and the knee will adjust, in real time, to accommodate the user. There is also a programmable 2nd mode for activities the amputee may want
to do aside from activities of daily living (riding bike, inline skating, etc.). A 3rd mode called standing mode can be used for activities that involve a lot of standing. This will take stress off of the sound limb so the amputee can stand longer and more relaxed.
Other benefits besides its unmatched stability are the ability to change speeds, recover from stumbles with a decreased chance of falling, going down hills, and going down stairs step-over-step. The C-Leg® is also a good choice for knee-disarticulation, hip-disarticulation, and hemipelvectomy amputees.
Studies have shown and amputees agree there is less energy expenditure while walking. Amputees also like the more natural gait pattern that is achieved in using the C-Leg® giving them a much better body image.
