A common problem for below-the-knee amputees is an increase or decrease in limb volume throughout the day. Vacuum-assisted sockets have been proven to eliminate volume fluctuations, insuring a snug fit throughout the day without the need to carry along numerous socks to take up space. This also helps with pressure points (sensitive areas) that arise with a decrease in limb volume.

Another benefit is increased proprioception, which means the amputee is aware of where their leg and foot are in space. The result is better balance, stability, and control of the prosthesis. Amputees often say, "the prosthesis feels like a part of me." Another reason for better proprioception is less up and down movement of the prosthesis called pistoning. Under vacuum, pistoning is greatly reduced.

A vacuum-assisted suspension also promotes healthier skin due to blood being drawn in and out of the socket like natural circulation. This also helps with healing if sores on the limb are a problem.

Using vacuum allows for lower trimlines in the socket that then allows for a greater range of motion in the limb, possibly increasing levels of activity for the amputee. Our ultimate goal is to get the amputee back to the level they were at before the amputation with the possibility to do even more if they should choose.
